In this guide, I’ll disassemble a Dell Latitude E5420 in order to replace the motherboard. I also remove the RAM, keyboard, palm rest, hard drive, wireless card, heat sink and cooling fan.
Unlock and remove the battery.
Remove four screws securing the service cover.
After service cover was removed, you can find the hard drive, memory, wireless card.
Remove four screws securing the hard drive and remove the hard drive.
If you want to upgrade the hard drive, just remove four screws, you can remove and replace the hard drive.
Remove all the screws and two covers.
Remove three screws under the cover.
Remove four screws securing the heat sink.
Remove the heat sink
Lift up the keyboard frame with your fingers.
Remove four screws securing the keyboard.
Lift up the keyboard.
Note: the keyboard cable still connecting to the motherboard.
You need to disconnect the cable.
Remove five screws securing the palm rest.
Unplug four cables form the motherboard.
Now we starting to remove the palm rest, you can use a pick to pry up the palm rest.
Lift up the palm rest.
Remove all the screws marked.
Disconnect four cables.
Remove the magnesium alloy parts.
Lift up the motherboard.

Remove two screws securing the cooling fan. You can remove the cooling fan.
